23rd meeting of the Working Group on Exonyms
23rd meeting of the Working Group on Exonyms,
Ljubljana Sep. 2022 – Call for Papers
Dear friends and colleagues,
Apologies for the long blank in communication. We have finally decided on the next working group meeting. The 23rd UNGEGN Working Group on Exonyms Meeting is planned to take place 31 August – 3rd September 2022 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This meeting will be held together with the Terminology Working Group, and will be hosted by the Anton Melik Geographical Institute, Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Gosposka ulica 13, Ljubljana).
As you recall, this is to replace the meeting initially planned for March 2020 which had to be cancelled due to the onset of the COVID pandemic. The meeting schedule is to have paper presentations and discussions 31 August (Wed) – 2 Sep (Fri) morning, followed by a meeting of the Terminology Working Group in the afternoon, and a fieldwork excursion on 3 Sep (Sat). Depending on the number of presentation proposals, we may truncate the meeting to 1-3 Sep, so please indicate your intention to present at your earliest convenience.
There is no participation fee for the meeting, but there may be a small charge for the excursion. Participants are asked to arrange for their transportation and accommodation on their own. Meals during the meeting are also to be paid by the participants.
There will be two leading themes for this meeting: the first is “Remaining ambiguities of the endonym/ exonym divide”, which is carried over from the last proposal in 2020. Notions such as “exonymoids” and “endonymoids” have been suggested in the past, where do they fit in the scheme of things? Would a proposition of a “third term” in addition to endonym and exonym be useful?
The Second theme is “Exomyms and Cultural Heritage”. It is stated (amongst others) in UNGEGN Decision 2/2021/12 which was adopted at the UNGEGN session held in May 2021, that the group of experts: (c) Decided to carry on further discussions in finding guidelines that reconcile the current resolutions of the UNCSGN on exonyms and its acknowledgement of exonyms as part of our cultural heritage; and (d) Encouraged further cooperation together with the Working Group on Geographical Names as Cultural Heritage to discuss the different functions of endonyms and exonyms and as parts of a distinctive cultural heritage.
Papers on any aspects on the above theme will be welcomed. We hope to have some core members of the Cultural Heritage WG take part in the discussions.
As usual in the previous meetings, any other topics connected with exonyms are also welcome, such as more practical case studies on implementing existing resolutions on exonyms. You are also very welcome to introduce a new topic that you think require attraction of our interest. And you are of course always welcome to report about your own projects connected with exonyms.
At the moment we don’t have plans on publishing a book containing the proceedings, but probably we can collate the papers into a pdf file and make it available to the public.
As always, the meeting is by no means confined to Working Group or UNGEGN members (if such membership existed). Everybody interested is very welcome.
Best Regards,
Kohei Watanabe, convenor of exonym WG
